Multimedia in a Story about Sedona, AZ

I found the article “Sedona's housing woes threaten its sense of community. Some blame vacation rentals” by Lorraine Longhi in the Arizona Republic, to be a great example of using multimedia elements to bring a story to life. This story uses a combination of video as well as photos to tell a story about how housing prices and vacation rentals in Sedona are destroying the community.  The video is extremely interesting because of the different scenes it shows a well as using still images as well as footage to have it fully capture the community of Sedona.

The video starts off with a wide shot of Sedona to set the scene but then moves into a still photo that is not as wide but has an incredible depth of field in focus meaning she used a small aperture to get the shot. There are also a few other still shots used in the video when it shows these it often has great use of jump cuts but make it feel natural for example there is shot first outside of a hotel and then next photo it cuts to is inside the same building seconds 18-28). I also thought it was interesting how the video had almost a time-lapse video feel of driving through Sedona at seconds 32-41. I think that this was a great way to show the vastness and landscape of Sedona also having the next shot be a still of a town in Sedona made it feel as though the viewer was going on a drive to this town in just a matter of a few seconds.

The video is great a telling the story and accompanying the piece there is also a photo gallery of Sedona also in this article. These photos are breath taking and show the full beauty of Sedona and makes the reader and viewer really get a sense of what the area is like. One photo that is a photo that particularly stood out to me is photo number 22 of 46 in the photo gallery.

I find this photo to be amazing and not just because of the view but also because of the technical aspects as well. The photo uses the rule of thirds well in how it is separated with the lake as the lower third the mountains and greenery as the middle third and lastly the rocks that form the top of the mountains in the upper third.  I also think that the lighting is great because of how it is able to show the shadow of the lake as well as capturing the bright rocks in the sun that are significantly farther back. Lastly I would like to point out the idea of color and how the reddish orange tones that dominate the photo make it stand out and be eye catching. The photo gallery really adds to the story and is what make this multimedia piece a great example because it includes both video and photos as well as writing.
